CBU Alumni Powering Progress:

How the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce is Strengthening the Local Business Community

With a team made up entirely of CBU Alumni, the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce is not only propelling the regional economy forward, but also demonstrating the value and impact of a CBU education.

Megan Penney, CEO of the Chamber and proud CBU graduate, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies and a Bachelor of Business Administration before completing a Master of Business Administration in Community Economic Development, all within just four years. Initially torn between psychology and business, she was excited to discover that CBU offered the flexibility to explore both. Her academic path placed her at the intersection of commerce and community, setting the foundation for the impactful work she leads today.

During her time at CBU, Megan immersed herself in projects that made a real difference, such as an on-campus initiative to address student food insecurity. These experiences helped her develop the community-first mindset that guides her leadership today. “Studying at home allowed me to really connect with Cape Bretoners and understand the unique challenges and opportunities we face here,” she says.

Now, as CEO, Megan leads the Chamber through an ever-evolving business landscape, remaining agile and community-focused in the face of global and national economic shifts. Under her guidance, the Chamber continues to foster growth, advocate fiercely for local enterprises, and generate opportunities that allow businesses to not only survive—but thrive.

Supporting Megan’s vision is Jacob MacDonald, another high-achieving CBU alumni and the Chamber’s Communications and Policy Coordinator. Jacob’s CBU journey is a masterclass in leadership and service. From being a Peer Success Mentor to serving as Valedictorian of the Class of 2024, Jacob’s passion for Cape Breton is rivalled only by his commitment to community impact.

“I knew I could get a top-notch education without ever leaving home,” says Jacob. “CBU allowed me to build strong relationships, give back to my community, and develop professionally in ways I never expected.”

Now in his role at the Chamber, Jacob ensures that local businesses are not only heard but are positioned to succeed through strong policy advocacy, impactful communications, and meaningful engagement. His hands-on experience at CBU, from advising fellow students to representing the University across the region, has directly translated into real-world results at the Chamber.

Both Megan and Jacob are recipients of the prestigious Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies. In addition, Megan was awarded the Rosetti Scholarship and the Dr. John and Jean Eyking Scholarship, while Jacob received the Chancellor’s Scholarship.

The newest addition to the team is Dylan McSween, who returns to the Chamber as the Membership and Events Coordinator. Dylan graduated this May from CBU with a Bachelor of Business Administration, majoring in Marketing. Also a recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship, he recently spent a semester abroad studying in Limerick, Ireland, an experience that broadened his perspective and enriched his approach to community engagement.

At its core, the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce is proving that investing in local education pays long-term dividends. With CBU grads leading the way, the Chamber isn’t just supporting local business, it’s shaping the Island’s economic future, one innovative idea at a time.
