Success in Public Health:
CBU Grads Making a Difference Across Canada
Cape Breton University's Public Health program continues to deliver on its promise of preparing graduates for impactful, meaningful careers in health and safety across the country. Two recent graduates from the Class of 2024, Viraj Chauhan and Atharva Chohan, are living proof of the program's success, having launched careers that not only serve communities but also fulfill personal and professional aspirations.

Viraj Chauhan, originally from Mumbai, India, now works as an Environmental Health Officer with Northern Health in British Columbia. “My typical day includes inspecting public facilities, investigating disease outbreaks, and reviewing sewage applications to ensure public safety,” she explains. “The dynamic nature of the work keeps me constantly learning and engaged and the beautiful Canadian Rockies are a perfect backdrop to my career.”
Viraj credits her time at CBU for preparing her well for her new role. “CBU played a significant role in shaping who I am today. The hands-on lab sessions and supportive faculty helped me develop the skills I use every day,” she says. She also highlights the welcoming community of Cape Breton for helping her grow personally and professionally. Her advice for current students? “Get involved, attend conferences and always stay curious. That’s where true learning begins.”

Atharva Chohan, is now serving as a health inspector for Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Atharva shared that it wasn’t always easy, “My time at CBU was mired with personal tragedies, but also the fulfillment of lifelong dreams,” he shares. “From restoring an auto rickshaw to honing my skills as a stone sculptor, I found creative outlets and strong emotional support. I now see my professors as family who guided me through both my professional and personal journey.”
Atharva also worked as a student in one of CBU’s on-campus labs, gaining hands-on experience that contributed directly to his success. His advice to future students is rooted in both humility and humanity: “Listen to your professors, and learn the art of engaging with people from many cultures, because public health isn’t just about science, it’s about people.”
Stories like Viraj and Atharva’s showcase how CBU’s Public Health program empowers students with the skills, support, and confidence to make a real-world impact, whether along the coast in Nova Scotia, the mountains of British Columbia or anywhere around the world! CBU alumni are making a difference, both in their communities and for future generations of students.
