A First For CBU
As we celebrate our 50th anniversary and grow as an institution, we achieve and celebrate many milestones. The B.Ed class of 2023 marked such a milestone by establishing CBU’s first class gift.
In 2023, the Bachelor of Education Society at Cape Breton University began a journey to redefine the impact of their annual gala. The society for the class of 2023 set out not only to host their annual event but also strive to make a difference.
“We wanted to make an impact,” says Shalynn Bates, co-officer of the 2023 society. “Knowing we could support future teachers in their pursuit of an education degree was so important to us. It was one small way we could leave a legacy”

CBU B.Ed co-officers Shalynn Bates and Holly Steylen get a look at the future of CBU's campus at an event for early supporters of the Forever CBU Campaign.
What began as a traditional fundraising campaign for their annual gala soon transformed into a mission with a broader vision — supporting the opportunities for future Bachelor of Education students through scholarships. Recognizing the power of collective action, the students used their creativity and determination to make a difference creating a first at CBU.
While planning for their gala, the students surpassed their initial fundraising goals. With a commitment to paying it forward, the Society’s executive members decided to allocate a portion of their funds to create two student awards, ensuring that their legacy would live on.
The Society made a generous commitment of $1,000 and worked with the 2024 B.Ed Society to ensure this gift was realized. This donation laid the foundation for two student awards, each valued at $500.
This became the first ever class gift of its kind. A class gift is typical at many post-secondary institutions as it leaves an important legacy, but CBU has yet to have one established – until now. The Bachelor of Education Societies of 2023 and 2024 not only redefined the purpose of their annual gala but also pioneered a legacy.
“We knew that this was only a beginning,” said Bates. “We hope that this initial class gift lays the groundwork for others to do the same. We know the difference it can make.”
Recognizing the potential to make a lasting impact, this gift not only funded two student awards, but also set a precedent for future classes, illustrating the power of collective action and the impact of their commitment to education.
This initiative extends beyond the financial support as it symbolizes a community coming together to invest in the educational journeys of those who will follow in their footsteps. The Bachelor of Education Societies of 2023 and 2024 exemplify the spirit of giving back and creating a legacy of support within the academic family at Cape Breton University. Their actions serve as a testament to the impact that shared efforts can have on shaping opportunity for both the present and the generations yet to come.
