CBU - 50 Years in the Making
Nestled in the heart of Sydney, Nova Scotia, the Old Sydney Society and CBU recently unveiled an exhibit that invites visitors on a journey through the storied history of the Island’s only university. For alumni, this nostalgic exhibit serves as a way to explore the Institution's beginnings and its transformation over the past 50 years.
With a curated collection of artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia, the exhibit chronicles CBU's evolution. From its humble origins as the Xavier Junior College, to Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology, the College of Cape Breton and University College of Cape Breton (UCCB) and finally Cape Breton University (CBU) this exhibit vividly portrays the growth and development of the University over five decades.
The display pays homage to the visionaries, educators, and students who have shaped CBU's identity. Each section highlights moments in the University's history, from academic milestones to cultural celebrations that have enriched campus life and surrounding community.
The exhibit also hosts tributes to notable alumni whose accomplishments have left a legacy. Their stories tell the impact of a CBU education and underscore a significant and growing alumni network.
A walk down memory lane, this is a chance to reminisce about campus life, traditions, and the friendships forged in the halls of CBU. The artifacts and displays reinforce CBU’s values of community, diversity, and lifelong learning.
The Old Sydney Society's exhibit not only celebrates CBU's past but also highlights its ongoing commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and cultural diversity. It serves as a testament to the University's role in shaping the educational landscape of Cape Breton and beyond. The exhibit sparks conversations about the University's impact - a legacy that continues to resonate long after graduation. Whether reliving your own CBU journey or discovering the Institution's history for the first time, guests are invited to take in the legacy that connects past, present, and future generations of CBU Alumni.
The exhibit is open to the public throughout the year during the museum’s regular opening hours from May 21 - November 15, 2024 - Tuesday - Friday: 9:00am-5:00pm and Saturday: 10:00am-4:00pm
