Breaking Barriers
Erin Schaus' Journey from CBU to Officiating at the Olympics
For Erin Schaus, this summer will be one for the record books as she heads to the 2024 Summer Olympic games in Paris, France. Erin has carved out a life as a trailblazing official in the sport of sprint canoe/kayak and her journey from halls of CBU to the international stage is an inspiration for aspiring officials worldwide.
Erin's path to becoming an official began at a very young age. Growing up in a household where her father and late brother competed for Team Canada, Erin was immersed in competitive sport, gaining firsthand insight into the dedication and effort needed to reach national and international levels.
Her path in the world of officiating took shape over the next 20 years. Her dedication quickly propelled her through the ranks, eventually becoming the Chief Official for canoe kayak at the 2022 Canada Games in Niagara—a milestone reflecting her growing influence and leadership in the sport.
Erin's achievements extend beyond national borders. In a ground-breaking role at the 2022 Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships in Dartmouth, Erin made history as the first female official to serve as an event starter at a world championship. At the Tokyo Paralympic Games, she became the first female canoe/kayak starter at a Paralympic competition. These opportunities marked significant strides towards gender equity in sports officiating, well beyond canoe.
In 2023 came her most significant opportunity. Erin was chosen to be one of the starters at the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, marking the first time a female has held this position at the Olympics in sprint canoe/kayak.
From Erin's days at CBU to her role on the international stage, she stands as a testament perseverance in sport and beyond. Through countless hours of training, overcoming challenges, and pushing boundaries, she has not only achieved remarkable success, but has also inspired others with her determination and drive. Her story resonates with young women officials, illustrating the power of resilience and commitment in the pursuit of excellence.
As the CBU community celebrates Erin's achievements, we are reminded of the university’s role in nurturing leaders who shape the world through their actions and inspire others to reach for new heights. Erin continues to pave the way for a more inclusive future in sports officiating.
