"CAPERS in the Community"

...At Home

While following our Nova Scotia provincial orders to “Stay the Blazes Home,” our work and our social lives moved predominantly to online. The same is true for one of Cape Breton University’s programs that was introduced in the summer of 2019 – CAPERS in the Community.

CBU, with its partners, Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s (CBRM) Recreation Department and Active for Life Program, is proud to introduce CAPERS at Home - a new online program that will deliver activities, challenges and games to encourage people of all ages to stay home and stay active.

"We are excited to help the community stay active during these challenging times,” says John Ryan, CBU’s Director of Athletics. “This partnership with the CBRM will allow us to bring our student-athletes into people's homes virtually to provide a great opportunity for everyone to become engaged and participate in sport."

The program, an online video series featuring CBU's varsity student-athletes and many special guests including alumni and community members, will provide the opportunity to try various sports while building physical literacy and fundamental movement skills to assist participants in becoming active for life in their own home.

One Alumna who is helping with this initiative is Chelsea Currie, former CAPER women’s soccer star and current CBRM Department of Recreation representative. During this first at-home video, Chelsea shows viewers the importance of balance in all stages of life and how it extends to many different sports and activities.

“Social isolation has truly been one of the toughest challenges for the entire world in recent history, in terms of both physical and mental wellbeing. But our community, one that thrives on connecting with and supporting one another on a personal level, has especially been impacted. That’s what makes Capers at Home so special. You and your family can work alongside some of our greatest community sport advocates, and communicate with student athletes all over the world! It brings sport and physical activity development to your home, to practice with your loved ones, at your own pace.” - Chelsea Currie.
