From Student to Leader
Lefin Chacko's Journey at Cape Breton University
For Lefin Chacko (‘22), the move from India to Cape Breton was not an easy choice. Leaving behind his wife and young daughter proved to be very difficult, but Lefin found friendship and purpose in his new home. Today he stands as a testament to resilience, perseverance, and community leadership.
Arriving at CBU in 2021, Lefin quickly immersed himself in campus life, embracing new opportunities while pursuing his studies in engineering. Beyond academics, Lefin's involvement extended to his school spirit. Lefin was often found inside the CBU Caper Mascot at many CBU and community events, where his infectious energy and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on students, faculty and the entire community.
Throughout his time at CBU, Lefin developed a deep connection to Cape Breton, which he now proudly calls home.
After graduating, he worked tirelessly to secure a meaningful work in Cape Breton to ensure he could welcome his family to Canada. He was hired at the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce and soon after his wife and daughter emigrated from India to join him.
After working at the Chamber, he was hired as Project Coordinator/Engineer with Pomerleau Lindsay Health care partners. In this capacity, he works on critical projects such as the expansion of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the construction of a state-of-the-art cancer center. These initiatives are not only professional milestones but reflections of Lefin's dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure and patient care in his new community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Lefin has been making roots here in Cape Breton. He recently purchased a home and welcomed a second child. Arriving in a new country is one thing, but settling and integrating into the community is an exciting new chapter.
As a proud CBU alumni, Lefin continues to inspire others. His contributions to healthcare infrastructure and community development in Cape Breton stand as a testament to the impact of his CBU education and the difference one person can make.
His story serves as motivation for current and future students, reminding us all of the opportunities that education and determination can unlock.
Recently, Lefin was nominated and for ApplyBoard’s 2024 International Alumni of Impact program! The program honours former international students who graduated from Canadian postsecondary institutions, recognizing their positive global impact. Winners will have their stories shared, and a scholarship named after them to support incoming international students.
In celebrating Lefin’s achievements, we honor not only his accomplishments but also the transformative power of education and the perseverance required to make a new and exciting life.
