To the Alumni Family,

Each year, February marks the celebration of African Heritage in our country.

The Cape Breton University Alumni Family is proud to recognize this vital period to reflect on the diversity within our family and look at society with cultural awareness front of mind.

This year Nova Scotia’s African Heritage Month provincial theme, Through Our Eyes: The Voices of African Nova Scotians, recognizes the longstanding history of people of African Descent in the development of Canada. The theme explores and examines the effects of anti-Black racism, and honours the voices of African Nova Scotians who blazed the trail for change.

There are many powerful and dedicated voices in our Alumni family who have an important impact on encouraging diversity and inclusion in our everyday lives. This is an ingrained way of life, not just for this month For that, we say thank you.

The CBU Alumni Board of Directors is dedicated to shining a light on diversity and inclusivity in all that we do. An established sub-committee focused on equity, diversity and inclusion is working to ensure that what we are doing as a board is representative of the members of the Alumni family we serve.

Our Alumni family is diverse and we have members in all corners of this world. Just as CBU does, we value firmly celebrating diversity and inclusivity. Most recently, CBU announced the signing of an MOU with the Community United for Black Education (CUBE) as well, a $500,000 donation was announced with a commitment of additional funds for the establishment of the Wanda Robson Scholarship. We are incredibly proud of the work of the university and look forward to supporting these efforts.

As the board works closely with the members of the Development Department, support for African Nova Scotia Students and students from all walks of life becomes so imperative for our future Alumni. I look forward to sharing exciting news in the months to come.

On behalf of the CBU Alumni Association Board of Directors, I wish to celebrate a very happy African Heritage Month. I encourage you to keep equity and inclusion as important parts of your every day life, long after this month is over. Sincerely,

Michelle AuCoin CBU Alumni Association Board of Directors
